Mobile Phone Photography

So I am writing this from a hotel room in Brighton.

I am down here attending a three day conference and because of that I have travelled very light.

That’s not to say I don’t have my camera with me, I did bring my Sony a5000 and a small 30mm lens.

But I don’t have it with me during the day, because it’s a fairly long walk between my hotel and the venue, we only get about half an hour to grab lunch and we finish up about 7pm in the evening.

Not really that much chance for any photo opportunities.

Having said that, the walk from my hotel to the venue is along the sea front and like almost everyone these days, I do have my mobile phone with me.

This morning was a fairly nice one and the seafront in Brighton tends to be fairly quiet at 8am, I had started off from my hotel in plenty of time, so I decided to grab some images with my phone and see what kind of results I could get.

I have to say a lot of the shots were pretty awful, blurry, out of focus, under/over exposed…

Sadly you don’t have much control shooting with a camera phone and I think I spent as much time deleting images as I did taking them.

Having said that it wasn’t all doom and gloom, when I downloaded to my laptop this evening, I did manage to get about half a dozen images that I was fairly happy with.

The only thing that did disappoint me with all of these shots was the poor colour representation, most of the shots were over saturated and looked a bit surreal.

To get around this I decided to pop them through Silver FX Pro and convert them to black and white.

The resulting photos were quite pleasing.

Obviously not up to the standard of a dedicated camera but for a phone camera they for me were pretty good.

And seeing as we carry our phones with us almost every waking hour it’s nice to know that you can get some decent images with your phone if you work around the obvious limitations that they have.

After all any photograph is better than no photograph at all.
