Lilies

Last week one of my Wife’s Aunties brought her a bunch of flowers and in these flowers were some as yet unopened lilies.

As the lilies began to bloom towards the end of the week I decided that getting a few images of these delightful flowers in all their glory would be an ideal project for the weekend.

Come Sunday the lilies were looking beautiful and so i set up my Studio lights, grabbed my Camera and set about the task.

The main problem that I faced was how to present the lilies so that I could photograph them.

I decided that a tall thin vase would be ideal, all I would have to do was make sure that I shot from a point where the vase would not be visible in the final image.

I found this very limiting with regards to the angles that I could shoot from, if I went too high or too far back I was not only getting the vase in the shot but sometimes the table they were standing on too.

No this would require a different approach.

Suddenly a light bulb went on in my head, I remembered that I had an adaptor arm which was designed to fit onto a lighting stand and hold a reflector or diffuser, the design of the arm meant that it had two bulldog style clips on either end of a telescopic pole that held the sides of the reflector in place.

I thought that these clips would be perfect for holding my lilies.

Sure enough they held the flowers nicely and where versatile enough for me to move around and give me any shooting angle I needed without getting in the way of my final image.

I spent the next hour shooting away, changing the angle, changing the lighting and generally trying to get something I was happy with.

Once I had my final images on the screen, I chose the one you see here the only problem I then had was whether it looked better in Black and White or colour.

I could not decide so I thought I would post both images and let you choose for yourself would you go for the colour or the black and white?

Until next time, happy shooting.

Darren

P.S. I decided on colour in the end and the image now has pride of place above our sofa.
